I went over to Golfsmith at Easton today to have my clubs re-shafted and re-gripped in anticipation of full throttle golf in central Ohio. Tom Thomas, Golfsmith’s Custom Clubmaking Specialist, helped me out.
Tom helped me pick out some Lamkin Dual Density Torsion Control Tour Grips. The Lamkin Grips have superb tackiness as they seem to stick to your hands. Apparently, they work well in conjunction with your glove (I didn’t have mine with me at the time). They’re kind of pricey but well worth it and they have a great look as well. Like all golf products, they promise longer and straighter shots. Tom’s knowledge and experience came through as he indicated that I needed more than a standard size grip and perhaps a little less than a midsize grip. He is going to add a little more tape to the shaft to give me the right sized grip.
I also learned from Tom that my current clubs were a half an inch shorter than standard and that I needed clubs that were standard length or perhaps a tad longer. So much for buying clubs off the rack and thanks to Special Tee on Sawmill for selling me undersized clubs. I had gone and looked at iron sets a couple years ago and compared my 5 iron with those of new sets. I thought they were just making clubs longer but it turns out that I got stuck with a set of runts. |
We also checked the lie and my swing speed and from that settled on a set of Dynamic Gold Stiff Shafts. Golfsmith sells these shafts with sensicore for a great price. Sensicore dampens the vibrations so that your hands and arms don’t get the brunt of a mishit. Once the clubs are ready, we’ll check the lie again and determine if the lie needs adjusted for my swing. It may just be that the longer shafts might do the trick. I can’t wait to get them and give them a spin. Now is a great time to tune up your equipment before the golf season hits full stride. New grips are always a good idea at the beginning of the season. But don’t get caught up in the new club mania. My instructor swears up and down that my 1996 Cobra irons are still great clubs. |

[…] Back in March, I reported on getting fit for the proper length clubs as well as for shafts that worked well with my particular swing. It’s been a few weeks and I thought I would follow up with how the “new” clubs have worked for me. […]
