Nicole says bye-bye to The Big Break

Wow, Brenda calls out Nicole in a head to head match and wipes the golf course with her. Nicole had no problem talking smack about Brenda either: “I’ll always be a better golfer than her.” Not on this particular day and not on this particular hole, you won’t. In fact, I don’t think Nicole hit one decent shot against Brenda. Nicole may be more in denial about her golfing abilities than Brian – if that’s possible. Compare her later quote: “I’ve never been to an elimination and it’s quite stressful.” Boy, her true colors came out at the end of this show. Anyhow on to the rankings:

7. Derek 9.5 points – This guy has duck hooked everything, and, in his head to head match against Brian, he yanks it into the woods yet again. He managed to get out and then hit an unbelievably lucky shot as he chipped in for eagle. I’m not convinced about this guy’s talent. He just got lucky. I’ll bet right now that he doesn’t make it to the final unless he has all kinds of room on the left.

6. Blair 10 points – “She is in total meltdown mode now.” Eugene smoked her in the head to head. Blair just hit one bad shot after another. The overall talent on this Big Break has to be the worst I’ve seen since the show started. To her credit, Blair hit two very nice bunker shots in the elimination round.

5. Eugene 10 points – Eugene is looking stronger and stronger on The Big Break but can he string together a few good shots? May be the sleeper of the show.

4. Brenda 11.5 points – Called out Nicole and closed her out no problem. Brenda is on a roll. Can she ride it out for a few more shows?

3. Brian 13.5 points – This guy has barely survived elimination on a couple occasions but he’s probably the best putter out there. Now if he can stay out of his own way as well as get one in play off the tee, he may be a force to be reckoned with. And we’ve got Brian quotes: “A bit longer putt than I suspected but that’s the nature of a pure shot.” “I hit it pure obviously, just swung a little too hard.”

2. Aaron – 14 points – He had a 30 yard chip to put pressure on Gerina and blew it 12-15 feet past the hole. He did hit some good bunker shots in the elimination round though. I think there’s a huge gap between him and Gerina and she smoked him head to head. He internalizes a lot of emotions and the volcano may explode.

1. Gerina – 16.5 points – She smoked a drive 290 against Aaron and had a 100 yard advantage on him off the tee. She is probably the Kim Welch of this Big Break. Despite Nicole’s claims, this girl is the real deal but you never know what will happen in this format. She has choked badly in the past as well.

At this point, I like Gerina, Eugene and Brenda to be in the final. Stay tuned.

Big Break Player Rankings after 4th show

8. Blair – 7 points – Blair took advantage of Gerina’s duck hook tee shot and managed to beat her head to head. Probably shouldn’t be ranked last but I’m sure the ranking system will work itself out with a few more shows.

7. Derek – 8 points – Hit one decent shot and managed to win the immunity challenge. Caroline was more deserving but couldn’t pull off a third consecutive brilliant bunker shot.

6. Nicole – 8 points – Another one who should be higher in the rankings but hasn’t been to elimination yet. Steady and flying under the radar. What happened to her love affair with Derek? Never mentioned in show 4 after the build-up during the third episode.

5. Eugene – 9 points – Managed a couple nice shots in the elimination round but probably should be ranked lower.

4. Brenda – 9.5 points – This was her strongest show yet. She was on all day.

3. Brian – 10.5 points – Brian keeps hanging around. Played better than his show 3 disaster at least.

2. Aaron – 10.5 points – Overrated and all references to “The Iceman” were gone in show 4.

1. Gerina – 14 points– Gerina had her worst show so far in the fourth episode of The Big Break but managed to pull through with some clutch shots in the elimination round.

Time for more Brian quotes:

“I love Kim. I’m even attracted to her. We have so much in common. But, uh, this is business, brother.”

“I never, ever, not chip at least one in out of twenty five (from the bunker).”

“I swung too hard and hit it pure.”

“That told me how well executed the purity of the shot was.”

Bonehead blunders for show 4:

1. Caroline taking her sweet time hitting shots at the glass panes.
2. Caroline – for leaving it in the bunker in the elimination round.
3. Brian – After watching Caroline’s putt blow by the hole, he races his by the hole as well.
4. Aaron – for missing a 5 footer to win and be safe from elimination round.
5. Gerina – for duck hooking it out of play and going to elimination as a result.

Big Break Player Rankings

Here are the Big Break Player Rankings after two shows (I’m not including the first show unless I catch it again being replayed). I’ve watched the fourth episode but haven’t factored that one in the rankings yet. By the way, Caroline was eliminated in the third show in case you were curious.

The rankings are based on shots hit.

Decent shot – 1/2 point
Really good shot – 1 point
Fantastic shot – 1 1/2 points

I had a bit of a dilemma as to how to rank shots in the elimination round and those in the non-elimination rounds. A player should not receive as many points for being in the elimination round or be able to rack up points just because he/she is in the elimination round. But, in the end, I figured experience in the elimination round probably helps a player out quite a bit towards winning the entire shooting match so you can rack up points in the elimination round and do so at the same value as non-elimination rounds. So here we go:

8. Nicole – 3 points – I hate to rank Nicole last and part of her low point total is she has not been in an elimination round yet. What killed her is her inability to score in the fade/draw challenge. In fact, she couldn’t even hit her driver 170 yards. I understand that it was cold and into a headwind but still that lack of power is going to eventually kill her chances on The Big Break Prince Edward Island.

7. Blair – 3 points – This is an unfair ranking as well as she did take out Gerina head to head in one challenge by hitting a shot within 5 feet. Blair has not been to an elimination round yet either and that hurts her point total. She also bombed in the fade/draw challenge with zero points.

6. Eugene – 3 points – Eugene survived elimination on the fourth show so I have to rank him above the others even though the third show hasn’t been counted in the point totals yet.

5. Brenda – 4 points – Huge mental mistake in the putting challenge in show 2 that sent her to elimination but scored some big points against Football with a couple really nice shots.

4. Derek – 5.5 points – Got beat by his paramour in the head to head challenge on show 3 and hit some good and terrible shots in the elimination round. Interestingly, the love connection between Derek and Nicole disappears from show 4. But look for fireworks between Nicole and Brenda as I don’t think Nicole appreciated all the jealous razzing of Brenda.

3. Aaron – 6.5 points – Allegedly, the Iceman but I’m not convinced. Like Derek, hit some really good as well as terrible shots in elimination round on show 3.

2. Brian – 8 points – ok, my point system needs a few more shows to work itself out. Brian is a huge head case and I’ve collected some great quotes from this guy. He can barely hit it past 200 with his driver yet still can’t keep it in play. Survived a scare from Kim despite picking up twice in the elimination round. The only thing he’s done is shown that he can putt better than anyone else.

1. Gerina – 10 points – Despite a terrible showing in show 4’s elimination round has been the class of the field. I guess we all have bad days now and again. Hopefully for her, her bad days are over.

How about more rankings – Top Bonehead Plays on The Big Break Prince Edward Island

1. Brenda – putting from the 3 point line when she only needed 2 points. That mistake led to elimination round for her.

2. Football – first chip of elimination rolls off the green and pretty much sealed his fate.

3. Kim – 67 yards from the green and can’t hit it within 20 feet. Bye bye.

4. Aaron – going for it all in the driving grid when he could have played it safe and probably beat Gerina.

5. Derek, Brian and Aaron for hitting into the woods on show 3’s elimination round.

Now it’s time for Quotes from Brian and others:

“I hit the ball 300 plus yards if I connect but it’s not necessary.”

“If my shots are not inside five feet, I am miserably unhappy.”

“I was very disappointed but I never hit it good” (After Gerina toasted him in the driving grid).

“You don’t just gingerly look out in the fairway and say I’m going to hit it out there. You look at your eye cornea. I’m going to put this dart through your eye cornea.”

“I want to think about my talent and my hard work and when I think about that, I should be in first place.”

“When my stroke is on, it’s as good as any human being who’s putted the game of golf. It’s dead nuts perfect. I make putts from everywhere.”

“It was just a disaster. We were in a disaster area on a personal note.”

“If you look at my pitching wedge, there’s almost an indentation in the sweet spot from hitting so many dead-on sweet shots.”

“You have to understand the level of play that I’m used to for myself.”

Ok, I can’t save all the quotes for Brian. Here’s one from Kim:

“I was 10 inches short of eliminating Brian and moving on to the next show.” – No, actually you were 6-8 feet away from doing so.

Kim Waves Bye-Bye on Big Break

Kim was the next to leave the Big Break Prince Edward Island. I only caught the elimination challenge but saw enough to see Kim hit every one of her approach shots just short of the circle on the green. You would think by the third time something would have resonated.

More to follow later.

Big Break, Prince Edward Island, Football Goes Home

We are on to another season of The Big Break and this time it takes place at Prince Edward Island. I didn’t cover the first episode but suffice it to say that a real tool was eliminated, a Mr. Robert Read. Robert was waiting to see who he would be facing in the first elimination challenge and said words to the effect of “The lion awaits patiently prior to attacking his next victim.” This guy couldn’t be serious and then he was canned in the elimination challenge.

I was really intrigued when The Big Break started with its first challenge on the first show – a three foot putt. Sure enough at least three of the contestants missed it. If memory serves Mr. Read, Eugene, Kim and Brenda (I believe) blew the knee knocker. What a way to start the competition. I’ll be very interested to see how it finishes.

William “Football” Thompson was the next to depart. I’m sure the producers were kicking themselves for losing the personality of the show. I bet that they find some way for Football to play his way back into the show. The guy brings too many more viewers to the show. Besides, he is an excellent foil to the Don Donatello of Season 11, Mr. Brian Skatell, who like Mr. Donatello will fold under all the self-induced pressure and over-reaching expectations.

Of course, The Big Break producers had to sex it up with the likes of Blair O’Neal and Nicole Sikora. Gerina Mendoza ain’t too shabby neithers but none hold a candle to Kim “Sex Kitty” Welch,

Meow!

I don’t see Blair lasting too long and Nicole has been a bit shaky as well in the first two episodes. The golfing class of the women appears to lie with Gerina and Caroline Larsson.

Time will reveal all!

Tiger Woods: How I “used to” play golf

It’s been about 8 years since the release of Tiger Woods: How I Play Golf. I’m glad I purchased the first edition because I’m sure Woods has or will be making plenty of changes to his book.

I can probably find several in just one chapter. How about Chapter 7, “How to Smoke the Driver.”

Tiger starts off Chapter 7 with an anecdote going back to the 2001 Masters. He had blown his drive by Mickelson’s on the 18th during the final round. During the 2009 Masters in the final round, Mickelson was consistently blowing it way past Tiger. My, how times have changed.

Tiger is pictured using Titliest equipment. We might be seeing a later edition with Nike substituted.

Here’s the biggie: “For more yards, I ‘snap’ my left leg.” “I’ve found that by snapping my left leg straight, my hips clear faster and speed up the movement of my shoulders, arms and legs.” (p. 173 and listed as Tiger secret no. 5)

Don’t be surprised if that tip mysteriously disappears from later editions of the book.
