Champions Golf Course

Hole number one at the bend – above picture taken Spring 2208.

Champions Golf Course Hole 1 Columbus, Ohio Fall 2023

378 yard par 4 1st hole at Champions Golf Course

I recently returned to Champions Golf Course for the first time in about two years. When I first moved to Clintonville, I used to almost exclusively head over to Champions for a round of golf as it was convenient and a challenging course. In fact, it was so challenging that the best I ever shot was 86. At the time, I remember that the tee boxes were in terrible condition and the condition of the course overall was fair. At some point, they changed their policy on weekends to where you had to take a cart before noon or 1 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. This change resulted in a greens fee of $45-50 which I felt was ridiculous given the condition of the course. At around this point, I stopped going to Champions.

Blue Ash Golf Course

Par 4 365 yard first hole at Blue Ash Golf Course near Cincinnati

A cold and blustery day found us at Blue Ash Golf Course just north of Cincinnati, and it only got colder and windier as the day progressed. This was probably not the best day for golf but I sure didn’t drive down to Cincinnati to go bowling! Days like Saturday separate the boys from the men and the hackers from the golfers. Pictured above is the opener at Blue Ash. It’s a dog leg left par 4 with a stream dividing the fairway (just in front of the carts in the picture). Leave your driver in the bag and lay up to . . .

Reid Lockhart Wedges

Reid Lockhart Wedges

I just got my Reid Lockhart Wedges assembled. Here’s a shot of the clubheads. You may not be able to tell from the picture but these are precision milled clubheads. They are designed to put super spin on the ball. I’m waiting for the grips to set before I try them out but, once I do, I will give a full report. These are really sharp looking wedges. I coupled them with some True Temper Dynamic Gold Shafts with Sensicore and some yellow and black Golf Pride DD2 grips. The wedges also come with their Patented Reid Lockhart Dual Bounce Sole which makes the wedges easy to hit from the sand as well as from the fairway and rough. These are 52, 56 and 60 degree wedges.

Stay tuned as we at ohiogolfblog.com may become a retailer of this product soon. If they work as good as they look, they should be a smash hit.

The Golf Cradle

This item is from The Golf Channel’s “Fore Inventors Only,” if you happened to catch that show. The best part of the show may have just been Stina Sternberg, but this is a handy little item that I may pick up in the near future – The Golf Cradle.

You place it in your car trunk and it provides a stationary base for your clubs to rest on. It prevents damage that may occur to your clubs in transport. I could really use this as I generally just keep my clubs in my trunk, and they get sloshed around all the time with the daily grind of driving. I assume that it somehow attaches to your trunk but maybe not. Perhaps just the weight of the clubs keeps it in place. Some of the best inventions are the most simple ones.

Personally, I’d love to get a trunk organizer that completely outfits your trunk for golf and golf only. Is there one out there?

Happy Birthday to Gene at Bridgeview Golf

I learned today that Gene at Bridgeview Golf Course turned 80 today. Gene is currently not working at the pro shop and we sure miss him. Maybe we’ll see him this spring sometime.

Yesterday was an anniversary of sorts for me as well. On April 6, 2002, I hit my one and only double eagle at Minerva Lake Golf Course, Hole #7. It sure was ugly but they don’t draw pictures on the scorecard.

How to break 80

How to break 80 – mind games

When you head out to the course, do you tell yourself, “I want to break 80 today”? Or do you say, “I need to shoot 40 or better for the front nine”? If so, you may be setting yourself up for defeat before you get started.

If the number that you are focusing on is “80” – you may just shoot that. If you want to break 80, why not focus on 79 or 78 or even 77? Get the number “80” out of your head. If you have a halfway goal of 40 or better, change that to 38 or 37 or 36. Go out to the course with the thought of shooting 77. You can still miss that goal by as many as two strokes and break 80. But make sure you’ve convinced yourself that your goal is 77 otherwise you may fool yourself into an 81.

The same logic holds true for breaking 90 or 100. Don’t get so focused on the number that that’s all you can think about. If that’s all you think about, you’ll probably shoot the number or more.

How to break 80

How to Break 80

I headed out to the driving range today in search of new ideas for how to break 80 and whenever I go to the driving range I try to work on a specific skill. You don’t want to head out to the driving range and just start pounding balls with no purpose. There was a flag 56 yards away from me so I decided that I would find a swing that would hit the ball 56 yards on the fly. What better skill to work on at the driving range than to hit a ball an exact distance consistently!

I went back to my stiff wristed shot as described in one of my tips for breaking 100. If you need a refresher on what that is then check it out now. I came up with a swing with a 56 degree sand wedge that went back to 10 o’clock and ended at about 1 o’clock. If you’re not following – my feet are at 6 o’clock and my head is at 12 o’clock. If my backswing takes the club back to parallel with the ground then the club is at 9 o’clock. If my follow through takes the club to parallel with the ground then the club is now at 3 o’clock. This swing resulted in about a 56-58 yard shot.
