Ables Golf on Avery offers Short Game Schools

Ables Golf is offering four short game clinics consisting of 7 hours of instruction on chipping, pitching, sand shots and putting. Ables promises a 4 to 1 student to teacher ratio.

Tuition is $225 and the school goes from 8:00AM – 4:00PM on the remaining dates of May 17 and May 24. That’s a long day of chipping for a lot of dinero. Ables might be better off cutting it down to a few hours and $99.

The Big Break

Adrienne and Liz leave The Big Break Ka’anapali

The latest episode of The Big Break Ka’anapali started out with the flop wall. Contestants could choose from six positions to hit over the flop wall and into a circle on a green behind the wall. The three contestants with the most points would be safe from elimination. This week, two women would be eliminated.

Some competitors cleared the flop wall from the fourth position. Kim, Tina, and Courtney cleared the flop wall from the fifth position and landed in the circle on the green.

Dana was the only one to try from the sixth position and landed it in the circle on the green. She was safe from elimination.

Darby Creek Golf Course

350 yard par 4 first hole at Darby Creek Golf Course

We headed out to Darby Creek Golf Course in Marysville, Ohio. I hadn’t been to Darby Creek in ages. Actually, the last time I had been there was for the Beek Open. Normal walking rate on a weekday afternoon is $26. There’s a $3 discount if you book online and print out the coupon to show them. I went with the Divot Card and paid $11. The Divot Card saved me $12. I’ll have to use the Divot Card about six times to break even.

The first hole is a dogleg left. You’d probably be fine with a five or six iron off the tee. It doesn’t play anywhere near the 350 they claim.

Approach to 350 yard par 4 first hole at Darby Creek Golf Course

This green is slightly elevated so if you miss it just right or just left, the ball will take a mean bounce off the mound. My approach hit the left mound and bounced/rolled all the way to the tall stuff resulting in a lost ball and a double bogey. Oh well, so much for easy pars.

In search of my divot card

I hustled over to Special Tee Golf on Henderson Road to obtain my divot card. Apparently, they only had four in stock and had sold them all earlier that day to one guy who purchased them for his foursome. I almost went over to Champion Golf across the way but didn’t. Turns out the Divot Card is now also sold at Champion Golf which is just due south of Special Tee Golf.

Looks like I have to hustle over to Ables Golf on Avery, 5300 Avery Rd., Dublin, (614) 529-9650 to try to get one before my tee time at Darby Creek. Darby Creek is the only participating golf course that doesn’t sell them at their place of business.

Heck, maybe I can become an affiliate for the Divot Card. I shall see.

Golf Channel’s Top Ten Sexiest Golfers

The Golf Channel recently had a show on its top ten sexiest golfers. Here’s the list from bottom to top:

10 – Sophie Sandolo – currently on The Big Break Ka’anapali
9 – Greg Norman
8 – May Wood
7 – Erica Blasberg
6 – Fred Couples
5 – Anna Rawson
4 – Tiger Woods
3 – Camilo Villegas
2 – Natalie Gulbis
1 – Adam Scott

TGC had to dip into unknowns to pick its top five women. I only am familiar with Sandolo and Gulbis. Personally, I think Gulbis is way overrated. She looks good now but I always think that she is one hamburger away from ballooning out. She has really skinny legs but the chubby face suggests that trouble lies ahead. I hope I am wrong.

I think Sandolo is even more overrated even though she came in at 10. Just because you make a nude calendar doesn’t mean you are sexy.

Just Joined LastMinuteGolfer.com

I just joined lastminutegolfer.com/columbus. It’s free to sign up and join. From what I can initially tell, Last Minute Golfer gets you discounted golf if you are willing to fill last minute tee times. It’s probably similar to what flying standby used to be. You got a cheaper fare just to fill the seat at the last minute.

To extend the airline metaphor some more, Last Minute Golfer also offers frequent golfer yards which you earn in a variety of ways including booking tee times through the site and by rating courses that you have played. It appears you can trade in those yards for further discounted greens fees.

Last Minute Golfer also offers a handicap service so you can get and maintain a handicap.

I’ll keep poking around the site and report more on what I find.

If you decide to sign up, tell them that RickSpringfield (that’s right – no space) referred you. I was listening to Jessie’s Girl at the time I signed up.

Local Golf Pro Complains about Columbus Golfers

I was reading an article on Steve Groves, the PGA Pro at Champions Golf Course. In the article, he’s quoted as saying: “My dad’s generation awakened in the morning and if the weather was bad, it didn’t matter. They went out and played,” said Groves. “This generation isn’t there, but we are seeing new people in the game. Our focus is to keep the current generation as excited about being in golf.”

Hey, but just one sentence later, he says, “Our season here is from mid-March through mid-November.” I assume he’s referring to Champions Golf Course.

When Champions is open year round, let me know. Until then don’t complain about this generation of golfers being soft. I was out every month except February. I’m glad I didn’t stop by Champions in January.

Tee to Green Review on 1460thefan

I listened to Tee to Green on 1460thefan.com. Hot topics were – 1) What is the longest iron in your bag; 2) Was the Masters boring; 3) What color shirt do you refuse to wear on the golf course; and 4) NFL draft comments.

The show moved pretty slow until they started fielding listeners’ questions. One listener (Walt, I believe) dared to say that Tiger Woods is turning people off to golf because people are getting tired of seeing him win. One of the hosts went so far as to partly agree with him.

The hosts also asked the listeners what position Scott McCarron would play if he were drafted in the NFL draft. I guess things were a bit slow on tee to green.

No mention of The Big Break Ka’anapali. C’mon, that’s got to be one of the hotter topics in golf.

Interesting fact: Why do people have trouble hitting longer irons? The less loft a club has the more sidespin the club will impart on the ball.

My answers to their hot questions:

1) What is the longest iron in your bag – 3 iron
2) Was the Masters boring – hell yes
3) What color shirt do you refuse to wear on the golf course – fuschia
and 4) NFL draft comments – Jake Long rocks.
