Thorn Apple Golf Club Hole #1

Here’s the 425 yard par 4 first hole at Thorn Apple. The bunker to the right can cause problems but, even if you land short of it, you have to fight the trees. A good tee shot is out to the left, giving you a better angle to the green.

Par 5 second hole at Thorn Apple

This is the par 5 427 yard second at Thorn Apple. It plays downhill and seems to be easier to reach in two shots than the 425 yard first hole. Perhaps the wind is generally with you from the tee on this hole. A stream runs through the fairway about 50-70 yards from the green.

No. 2 Green at Thorn Apple

Slope is from back to front and then from right to left. Large green ready to welcome second shots in.

Par 4 3rd at Thorn Apple

This is the 440 yard third at Thorn Apple which plays uphill and into the wind. And you thought the first hole was a bear. I once hit a stunning five wood to 6 feet on this hole and then proceeded to blow the birdie and par putts.

Approach to 3

Even from almost 150 out, you still can’t see the pond in front of this green until it’s too late.

Par 3 4th hole at Thorn Apple

This is the 175 yard par 3 fourth hole at Thorn Apple. As you can see a huge tree guards the right side of the green. A bunker to the left taunts those trying to avoid the tree.

Par 4 5th hole at Thorn Apple

Here’s the start of three manageable holes at the Apple. Five measures in at 385 yards. Bomb it over the bunker on the right and you’ll have a pitching wedge or less in.

Fifth green at Thorn Apple

Maybe even an approach resembling this.

Par 4 sixth at the Apple

There’s a pond way out there which can be found off the tee. I found it once looking for my wife’s ball that had rolled in. Unfortunately, my speed cart rolled in as I hadn’t set the hand brake. I caught the handle as the pond sucked it in. I pulled out a soaked and moss covered speed cart with clubs. What a nightmare! You talk about slippery grips. I still shot a 38 on the front but was in no mood for the idiots who honked at me while teeing off on nine. I guess it’s funny if you’re in the speeding car.

Sixth Green at Thorn Apple

I took this shot from an odd angle but am pretty sure that it is the sixth’s green and not the fourth green. As it is so well guarded by trees, I’m going to have to say that it is the sixth green.

Par 4 seventh at Thorn Apple

This is the 390 yard par 4 seventh. I call it the chute. So shoot the chute but there’s still some room on the right. Just watch out for the large evergreen at about 150 yards in.

Par 3 no. 8 at Thorn Apple

Thorn Apple like Mental Memorial nearby has some longish par 3’s. Doesn’t this course scream Jack Kidwell? The eighth is 175 yards from the whites. Pick a second or two when no cars are passing and get after it.

Par 5 ninth at Thorn Apple

Here’s another opportunity to practice traffic avoidance. I wish they would plant some trees or hedge between the road and these tees. This is the 520 yard par 5 ninth. A stream runs through the fairway around 150 in.

Par 5 10 at Thorn Apple
Par 5 10 at Thorn Apple

Back to back par 5’s is what you’ll find at the Apple. Weighing in at 550 yards, this one’s a challenge. They built up the left side of the fairway years ago and it’s coming in nicely.

No. 1 handicap at the Apple – a 245 yard par 3

The 11th usually plays back into the wind as well making it all of 245 yards. I’m pretty sure I’ve never birdied this one.

452 yard par 4 15th

This hole also makes a good case for the no. 1 handicap. It’s caused me plenty of trouble. On this day, the wind was with us and I bombed a drive down there only to blow the second shot.

Finishing hole at Thorn Apple

An elevated green awaits you at the finish of the par 4 390 yard eighteenth hole. Doesn’t this scream 1950s architecture? Oh well, the bar is not far away now.
