I had an urge to go somewhere that I hadn’t been to in quite some time, and I ended up at Kyber Run Golf Course in Johnstown, Ohio. I hadn’t been to the Run since July 2002. Ouch! Well, I was finally back and eager to see what had transpired in the last six years.
I entered the clubhouse and indicated that I wanted to walk 18. Imagine my surprise and extreme joy when I heard, “That will be 13 dollars.” I had found fall golf heaven at Kyber Run.
The opening hole at Kyber Run, par 5 511 yards
Here’s the unassuming opening hole at Kyber. But watchout because . . .
Trouble lurks to the right. I had forgotten about these ponds. Luckily, I teed off with a three wood and came up short of the water.
I thought this was classic – if you can’t read it, it says, “Just Hit It.” In other words, you are too far out to get home in two.
This pond doesn’t show up on the scorecard either. It lurks to the left of the first green and provides another issue to deal with if you want to get home in two.
Par 4, 423 yard second hole at Kyber
Here’s a shot of the approach into number two. The fall scenery only added to fall golf heaven.
Heck, even walking to the next hole was fun with vistas like this!
You can check out the pin placement on number 15 if you so desire on your way to the third hole.
par 4, 346 yard third hole
A three wood is also advisable off of this tee. If you hit it to the right or left of the “gate” with a driver, you will find yourself in jail.
Here’s the approach into three if you are not in jail.
Par 3 fourth at Kyber Run
This is just a gorgeous par 3 on a fine fall day! From the blue tees, it was a challenge at 200 yards with a little breeze in the face and a bunch of water to clear. I got lucky and birdied it. Fall golf heaven!
A little more scenery – the bridge right next to the third green.
532 yard, par 5 fifth at Kyber Run
Here’s the descent to the fifth green. Beyond the big tree and to the right is a pond that doesn’t show up in the scorecard picture. I was smart for once and 9 ironed it to the 150 marker.
Par 3 sixth at Kyber Run
Here’s the 175 yard par 3 sixth. I once blew a round with an 8 on this hole. The next time I played, I was gunning for this one and birdied it. I parred it today.
370 yard, par 4 seventh
This is a little dogleg left with a blind shot to the green. The fairway on this hole was in pretty rough shape but a great view from the tee.
446 yard, par 4 eighth at Kyber Run
The blues offer a real challenge here at no. 8. Get a good drive or else you are staring at bogey. Golfing heaven went a bit south here as I came up on two guys that were, shall we say, extremely s-s-s-l-l-l-o-o-o-w-w-w. I stayed behind them for four holes. They were completely ridiculous and never thought to let me play through. Finally, while they were looking for yet another lost ball, I just hit right past them and forced my way through. That was on eleven and I finished three holes ahead of them despite running into another group after that. I should have referred them to my golf etiquette section on the blog.
Here’s the approach into eight.
289 yard, par 4 ninth at Kyber Run
Damn all the water and the bunkers, it’s time to go for it here! I ended up short but on the fairway.
Par 4 10th hole at Kyber Run Golf Course
The 10th follows Duncan Plains Road. There’s a fence to your left so hooked shots will end up out of bounds. If you slice it to the right, then you’ll find the first fairway. As you can see there’s a valley that you will have to maneuver around on your approach shot to the green.
This is the Par 4 no. 11 at Kyber Run Golf Course. It’s a short par 4 and can be reached in one. The trick off the tee is that you can’t see the green. So if you are going for it and you have a cart, it’s well worth it to drive up and get your bearings. The fairway bends around a little to the left. I played through these two slow pokes on this hole as they spent ages searching for a lost golf ball.
Approach to par 5 12th at Kyber Run
This is the approach shot to the par 5 12th hole at Kyber Run Golf Course. This is a fairly straightforward par 5.
462 yard, par 4 13th at Kyber Run
I’ll just hit the highlights on the back nine due to space considerations. This is a beautiful par 4 and a bear from the blues at 462 yards.
The bunker in front caught me and watch out for the waste area to the right of the green.
With a creek guarding the front, I guess the course designers decided to bunker the hell out of the back of this green. It looks good from a satellite image anyways.
Par 4 15th hole from the tee at Kyber Run
Par 4, numero uno handicapo, 475 yard 15th at Kyber Run
Here’s the approach into the hardest hole on Kyber. Water lurks to the left of the green. I escaped with a par.
Par 4 15th from around the bend
View back up 15 from the 16th tee.
Note that the slow old dudes are nowhere to be found despite me playing through only three holes earlier.
Don’t go too far left here. The fairway drops off into a valley and there’s a woods and a creek to the left.
This is a tiny green at 16. Again err towards the right side.
par 5 finishing hole at Kyber Run
The great thing about Kyber is almost all the par 5’s are reachable in two which can be great until you blow your second shot which leads me to my next tip on breaking 80.
Well, Kyber was heavenly even though a bit crowded. But at $13 to walk on a nice day, I can see why. I hope to be back soon.
