It feels like Maui in here . . .

18th hole at the Kapalua Plantation Course - birdie time!
18th hole at the Kapalua Plantation Course - birdie time!

Columbus, Ohio saw a high temperature of 9 degrees today which was pretty cold to be even thinking about playing golf. But I couldn’t resist. I made the short trek over to Teed Up Indoor Golf. Teed Up has 20 virtual courses to choose from, and I chose the Kapalua Plantation Course. I was only planning on playing nine, so I chose the back nine because of the fabled 17th and 18th finishing holes. I ended up playing the back nine twice. I racked up a bird on 18 the second time around. I was in perfect position after a 287 yard bomb to duplicate Anthony Kim’s near double eagle but faded my second just short of the green. AH well, I settled for a birdie.

Putting is still tricky on these golf simulators. It’s difficult to develop any feel for distance as well as judging the break. Teed Up’s staff told me it would take a few rounds to figure out the putting. Distances on my clubs were a mixed bag. I was pounding my irons but having trouble with the driver. 8 irons were flying 166 yards on the range. 6 irons were just under two hundie. Reality is not so nice however.

My driver was flying shorter than normal – probably as a result of my desire to kill it. Having all kinds of stats jump up on the screen is not good for swing technique.

Chipping is almost as difficult as putting. Looking at the lay of the land on the screen doesn’t help so I was left in the midst of a mid-winter golf hiatus trying to figure out how hard I should hit the ball to have it go 25 yards. This is fairly perplexing in January, in Ohio.

The beauty (or not) of Teed Up is that without the walking, 18 holes and a couple dozen warm ups on the range takes about an hour for a single. Btw, it’s $29 for 18 holes.

Check it out – high of 7 tomorrow.

Seasons Greetings from Black Gold Golf Club

421 yard par 4 dogleg left first hole at Black Gold
421 yard par 4 dogleg left first hole at Black Gold

If the weather sucks in Ohio, go to somewhere warm to play golf. We were in Yorba Linda, California for a little late December golf. Merry Christmas to me!

Here’s the first at Black Gold. I cut a little too much off the left corner and found myself near the bottom of the hill and just inside the concrete/fence.

287 yard par 4 and well bunkered second hole at Black Gold Golf Course
299 yard par 4 and well bunkered second hole at Black Gold Golf Course

The second is well protected. If memory serves, I put it to the left of the bunkers and we chipped on from there.

Par 4, 364 yard third hole at Black Gold Golf Club

Three tee shots and all were just a little to the left. I found myself just to left of the bunkers here as well.
Greens were superfast – maybe the fastest I’ve ever played on.

496 yard par 4 4th hole, dogleg right
410 yard par 4 5th hole, dogleg right

I’m pretty sure this is the fifth hole at Black Gold. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong. It’s the number one handicap. It took everything we had to bogey this hole including a nice one putt bogey save.

Par 5 sixth hole at Black Gold

480 yard par 5 sixth at Black Gold. I had a shot at putting this on in two but came up a bit short. You run out of room to the left as you approach the green. And, of course, get it over the canyon in front of the tee. Don’t get greedy and try to cut off too much.

Reverse view of 18 as we headed to 10.

340 yard par 4 no. 11 at Black Gold

I drew my tee shot just a little too far left and believe it ended up in a canyon near the green. Damn!

I thought I got a shot of the par 5 13th which was a gorgeous hole but I can’t find it. Here’s the 12th.

Making my brother in law work for it!

Weight still on the back foot a little bit which would explain that fade. But a good fade!

378 yard par 4 14th hole at Black Gold Golf Course

We’re running out of daylight on this California winter day. This hole narrows quickly. We got through 17 holes before being blacked out. Not bad for $55 though.
