Episode 11 on The Big Break Ka’anapali featured six holes of stroke play golf among our final three participants – Kim, Lori and Sophie. The first two holes are a par 5 and a short par 4. Kim bombs it past the other two players on the par 5 but fails to take advantage of her length. All three players par the hole. Kim pulls a four iron out of the bag for the next hole, a short par 4. She basically cancels out her advantage. Lori three putts. Kim and Sophie make par.
The third hole is a 340 yard par 4. Sophie and Lori make a mess of the hole and both bogey. Kim fires another par. The fourth is a 143 yard par 3. Lori hits it closest to the hole yet three jacks for the third consecutive hole. Kim and Sophie make par.
We come now to our second par 5. Advantage Kim, right? Wrong. Kim hits three lousy shots in a row but manages to get up and down for par. Lori puts her third shot 60 feet away from the flag and three jacks for the fourth consecutive hole. Sophie nails a long one for birdie. Kim and Sophie are tied and have four shots on Lori going into the final hole. All three par the last hole for an anti-climactic finish.
Lori takes 16 putts over 6 holes after calling out Kim for her putting on a previous episode. How’s that for poetic justice? I guess, in the end, Lori just outright choked. Lori did have a point. Kim missed at least two very makeable birdie putts. To beat Sophie next week, Kim will have to make a few putts for birdie. Sophie could, however, fold under the constant beatdown of being outdriven by 50+ yards per hole. Kim needs to take advantage of her length.

Tiger’s shot on 13 ultimately did him in
Woods pulled off a miraculous shot at 13 which gave him the confidence to try what would have been an even more miraculous shot at 15, a slice 5 iron from 228 yards. The shot on 15 turn out to be ill advised. He did save par but in reality a par on 15 is a bogey especially when you are 3 behind at the time.
2007 Masters: A complete bore
Besides the lousy announcers (Faldo excluded), the 2007 Masters was a complete bore. Sure there was a little intrigue with Tiger trying to fight his troubled swing and come from three behind, but Masters tournament organizers had made the course so tough that the back nine on Sunday (typically the most exciting 9 holes of golf) was devoid of excitement. Where were the slew of birdies and eagles that allowed competitors to make a final 9 charge?
Granted Woods did have a back nine eagle and then completely blew it on 15 going for another, there were no other notable fireworks. Perhaps Masters tournament geniuses will figure it out next year and bring back the opportunity for the most exciting nine holes in golf.
