Monday finish in store for the Memorial Tournament

I predict the Muirfield curse will result in another Monday finish for the Memorial Tournament. The latest weather forecast calls for severe weather overnight and an 80% chance of rain on Saturday. Isn’t their some rumor that Indian burial mounds were moved or dug up to create the golf course? It is called Shawnee Hills afterall. I’ll do a little more research into that issue and let you know what I dig up.

That was easy –

Dublin – Muirfield Village Golf Club – 1976 – Was the start of the Memorial Tournament Jack Nicklaus – built the golf course on an Indian burial or sacred grounds. The legend has it – Chief Leatherlips makes it rain every year on Tournament. In 24 years it has been affected by rain 14 times. Twice it has been shortened to 54 holes. One year they move the tournament a week a head. It still rained.

What did Jack do with the Indian remains, if any?

More info on Chief Leatherlips.

1st round notable scores at the Memorial Tournament

How about Kenny Perry tied for second at -6.
Matt Kuchar continues his good play as of late – currently tied for sixth at -4.
In the whatever happened to Todd Hamilton department, he’s raising eyebrows tied for 14th at -2.
In the whatever happened to Shaun Micheel department, he’s tied for 20th at -1.
Phil, Sergio, and Couples are lurking at even par.
Els is in familiar territory at +1.
Davis Love III is at +2 and Chris Dimarco is at +3.
Ben Curtis is not doing much to prove his British Open wasn’t a fluke at +4.
Paul Azinger is in the field and at +8.
Charles Warren shoots the high score of the day with an 84, ouch!.

Courtney eliminated from The Big Break Ka’anapali

I caught the end of The Big Break. Courtney and Samantha were in the elimination and were playing two holes of golf – highest score goes home. Samantha shot 1 under and Courtney shot even par.

I had Courtney ranked last in my Big Break player rankings. So I guess you can say that I called that one last week. In fact, Courtney was lucky to avoid elimination last week as she kakked on almost every shot in the elimination round.

Mickelson recovers from poor drive to win Colonial

Highlights of Phil’s round including the magic wedge from about 140 away

My DVR ran out of space right before the final wedge and I missed highlights on Golf Central. I finally found the shot on youtube.com. Thank gawd for the internet!

Was Mickelson’s shot really that miraculous? Sure he got it over some trees but was it really that tough to pull off? It’s tough to tell when watching on tv. Given the circumstances it was a good shot but I’m not convinced it was a tough shot.

Btw, there sure is a lot of hype about Tiger’s return after knee surgery. Everyone, including Tiger, is predicting that he’ll win the US Open. Tiger doesn’t have a chance in hell of winning the U.S. Open. All that time away from competition is going to kill him. Won’t everyone feel foolish about all the b.s. hype after it’s over.

Tina eliminated from Big Break Ka’anapali

You would think that since Tina Miller has the fanciest website of all the Big Breakers that she may have won the Big Break Ka’anapali. If so, you would be wrong. Tina lost in a short game shoot out in the elimination round on last night’s Big Break Ka’anapali episode 6.

Last night’s episode also featured the dreaded “C” word out of Christina Lecuyer‘s mouth (btw, somebody scooped up christinalecuyer.com and it wasn’t Christina -oops! – hint to Kim, buy www.kimwelch.com now). I thought the Big Break producers would hype it up more but apparently they are saving some for next week’s episode. During the second challenge of the evening, Christina said that she hoped Tina choked on her shot to the green. When Tina missed her first shot, Christina practically shouted, “YES!” I guess fierce competition can bring the worst out of all of us. Or maybe Christina dreads the idea of being in the elimination round and will choke if she gets into one.

Longaberger Golf Club trying to lure ’em in with freebies

Longaberger is offering a number of freebies for golfers in an effort to get people to the course. I’ve listed the freebies and the days below. Longaberger is an 82 mile round trip from my house in Central Ohio. With gas prices continuing to go up, Longaberger may have to consider lowering their greens fees to get golfers out there. I can cut my round trip to 58 miles and just hit Cook’s Creek at considerably less expense as well as less travel time. Cook’s may not be as scenic as Longaberger but is every bit as good a course.

May 23, Complementary Longaberger Golf Cap with round of golf

May 27, Complementary Hat Clip with round of golf

June 1, Get your 2008 towel complementary with a round of golf

June 9, Replay a second round for only $20

June 17, Golf all day & a box lunch for $134

Complementary gifts only with a paid green fee.(No comp rounds)

Kim Welch survives scare on The Big Break Ka’anapali week 4

The most recent episode of The Big Break Ka’anapali started off with the ol’ glass breaking challenge. Nine competitors remain and were divided into three teams. Dana, Courtney and Sophie were made captains and picked their teams. Dana chose Kim and Susan. Courtney chose Lori and Tina.
Sophie chose Samantha and Christina. Christina was hacked off about being chosen last – “Don’t they realize that I’m good?”

In this challenge, each team had to break two panes of glass. Each team member took a shot, one at a time in relay race style, at the glass panes until they were broken. Courtney’s team finished first; Sophie’s second (thanks to help from Christina) and Dana’s finished last – failing to break a single pane.
