Valeria Ochoa cashing in on Big Break fame

Valeria Ochoa appears to be cashing in on her Big Break fame. And why not? She’s started her own golf academy and bills out at $120 an hour. I assume that her academy is at the Miccosukee Resort & Gaming Facility near her home in Florida. Please leave a comment to this post if you know otherwise. She will appear at your event for $1499 with travel expenses additional. She also appeared on the Big Break VII as well as the Big Break III. As long as the Golf Channel keeps her in the public eye, Valeria may be able to keep raising her hourly.

Judging by this picture, she appears to have a good shot at a career in modeling as well.

You go, girl!

Ouch! Hell, just do us all a favor, Valeria, and take it all off!

Sun Mountain Speed Cart – a must for walkers

One of my favorite golfing accessories is the Sun Mountain Speed Cart. I’ve had mine for several years now. Prior to the Speed Cart, I used to carry my bag. Sure, the double strap helped out a lot, but it never made any sense losing 3 or more strokes simply because lugging your golf bag on your back tired you out towards the end of the round. Heck, even the pros don’t carry their own bag.

The Speed Cart is the next best thing to a caddy – and may even be better. I love to walk because I get into a better rhythm than when I ride. I have time to consider my next shot as I walk to my ball as well as time to take in my surroundings and enjoy the round. Besides making walking easy on the golf course, the Speed Cart really makes playing in less than ideal weather a breeze.

Changes at Bridgeview Golf Course for 2008

The weather was too inviting to work today (at least it was in the morning – things turned windier and chillier in the afternoon) so I made my way out to Bridgeview Golf Course for the first time this year. They’ve changed things around quite a bit at Bridgeview. Now everyone goes to the range including golf course patrons. From the range, you walk under the bridge and start on what used to be hole no. 6. You end on what used to be hole no. 5. So you get a bridge view at the beginning and at the end.

Bridgeview has new signs for all the holes on each of the tees. They’ve also torn down what used to be the old, old clubhouse. There were rumors of that happening floating around last year. It appears that they have mowed the greens so putting isn’t a complete fiasco. There were plenty of branches on the first par 5 (what used to be no. 2). The wind was so strong today that I drove it over the green on what used to be the first hole – now no. 5.

I guess Bridgeview management figures that most people take a cart so the quarter mile ride/walk to the first tee isn’t bad with a cart. Wonder how they will handle people in carts passing walkers on the ride out to the first tee? Starting with a par 3 and having two par 3’s in the first four holes definitely won’t help the pace of play. I also wonder if they will have a starter on the first tee? We’ll see how the changes at Bridgeview shape up throughout the season.

The Brush T – Golf Equipment Plug

The Brush T
I started using Brush Tees after I found one on the golf course. That was a couple years ago and I’ve been hooked ever since. Why do I like the Brush T? Let me count the ways:

1 – You tee it up to the same height every time. No guesstimating here and no pop ups because you guessed wrong.

2 – They never break. You’re only risk is of losing them. As long as you use the container that they come in, they won’t lose their shape over time either.

3 – You’ll hit the ball farther using the Brush T. Unlike a tee that is cupped, the ball sits flat on the tips of the bristles. With a cupped tee, spin is imparted on the ball as it rubs against the cupped edge of the tee. It may be slight but this spin and friction will result in lost distance. Everybody wants a few extra yards, right?

Try them out, the Brush T comes in all sizes for every club.

I went over to Golfsmith at Easton today to have my clubs re-shafted and re-gripped in anticipation of full throttle golf in central Ohio. Tom Thomas, Golfsmith’s Custom Clubmaking Specialist, helped me out.

Warm weather gives Ohio golf season a jump start

Columbus weather forecasters were wrong yet again. Having earlier predicted a 40% chance of rain for today, it turned out sunny with highs in the lower 50’s in central Ohio. Despite the wet conditions resulting from melted snow and additional rain, I braved the elements to go play some golf on the first day of Spring. Bridgeview golf course is still closed until next week so I headed out to Minerva Lake Golf Course.

Conditions weren’t too bad. On a few holes, it was particularly soppy and muddy but overall it was much drier than expected. The greens are still in horrible shape however. But for 12 bucks, it wasn’t a bad deal.

Allen Doyle’s chip shot at 15 – did his ball move?

I was watching the Toshiba Open today and coverage went to Allen Doyle at the par 5 15th hole. It appeared to me that as he addressed his chip shot from just off the green that his ball moved backwards. Doyle went ahead and hit the ball and recorded a par at the 15th. I forgot that I had the power of DVR to watch it again. I’ll see if the Golf Channel replays it again tonight and record it. I believe that that would be a 2 shot penalty.
